Well Oppo, I applied for an opening with Toyota Motorsports GmbH....

Kind of freaking out about it because I have always wanted to work in motorsports and it is a job I have experience in. That and being young and dumb I could fairly easily pick myself up and move to Cologne. I haven’t told my SO that is where the job is though, which is part of why I am freaking out because what if I get the job?! But at the same time.... What if I don’t? Am I punching above my weight class? I guess if I move over there and it pays well, then I could buy my TVR or big Healey.

What do you think Oppo?

So I have thrown chance to the wind! Not only did I send the application to Toyota Motorsports, I also applied to a job with Koenigsegg that pointed !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! out. Gotta get life going eh?

If you don’t get it you’re exactly where you are now. No loss. But if you don’t try you might regret it for the rest of your life. Everything if you get it, move, and fail, at least you tried it and will have the benefit of the experience. Those are the three worst consequences I can come up with. The only one I’d be afraid of is regret.

I’d advise you not to get your hopes up too much. I don’t even want to know how many resumes I submitted to companies online and never heard a thing back.

I guess it depends on how serious of an SO this is whether you need to tell her. If it’s like a 1yr+ relationship, you need to tell her.

cologne france,germany or michigan?..... i dont know wich would be an easier sell tbh... but i am curious...

anyhoo.. id say go for it... if you do get it but for whatever reason decide you cant/dont want to move just turn it down (nicely)

I get that, there was always somewhat of a thrill/hope at applying to a job that you don’t think you’ll really get. I say that because it sounds like a long shot, but then again you never know.

I kind of wish I’d gotten a mechanical or computer engineering degree and gone into motorsports. I actually have close relations at the top level in motorsports too so I think I could have made it work.

It doesn’t hurt anything to apply right? Just submit the app and see what happens. If you do get it and your SO get’s upset you didn’t mention you’d be moving to another continent, then just play it off like you didn’t really expect to get it.

Yeah I have always wanted to go to Germany. I’ve spent 6 years in school learning the language. I am very rusty, but it’ll be easier to pick up that way.

lol dont worrie id still be safely one country over in the netherlands (and up north... so probably 3-4 hours drive)

and yeah germany is nice... and language wise if you already have the basics it shouldnt take you to long to get the hang of it when everyone around you speaks it

I have my M.E, I’ve been in the IT field for 20+ years. I’ve never applied my M.E. in any way/shape/form. My father-in-law works for JRM in North Carolina, and has many, many contacts. I could probably still make something work at this point, if I truly wanted to. It was my original goal, starting my college career, to be in the automotive field, specifically chassis dynamics.

Throwing caution to the wind and just doing what you want in life is always the best choice! Can’t get anywhere without taking risks. And just applying for a job isnt even a risk; there is no downside. Plus if it works out and you end up not liking it, you can always leave and do something else. You arent a prisoner anywhere. Living/working abroad seems like it would be really cool. Vastly different in some ways I imagine, but cool nonetheless.

I’m actually submitting my resume to Koenigsegg soon for their college internship program. Thank you for sharing, I saw their careers page a few weeks ago but have been putting off actually applying... More Oppo presence at the best car companies is a great thing!

McLaren is my dream job because they have McLaren motorsport, McLaren Automotive, and McLaren Applied Technologies all under one roof with the ability to transfer between the 3.

Ooooh, that is a very cool aspect. It has to make production much simpler.

I really want to do Aston Martin Racing, but a quick googling shows racing HQ different from AM HQ. Still would be fine by me

From my understanding the Automotive and Motorsport branches are mostly separate but Applied Technologies is responsible for a lot of the McLaren Electric and Hybrid systems as well as providing spec control electronics for the likes of F1 and Indycar. Applied Technologies is where I would really want to work but I wouldn’t mind trying the high pressure F1 environment.
